About the Foundation programme

What is the Foundation programme?

Our Foundation Creative Studies – Knitting programme is a 120-hour, supported self-study programme.

Studied over the course of a year, the Foundation programme is ideal for anyone who wishes to study their craft area in depth, which could be for personal interest or for professional development. You may have attended a number of workshops, or done an introductory programme and are now ready to progress, integrating design alongside good craft skills to develop as a designer-maker or pattern designer.

We are very proud to be able to say that our Foundation programme is accredited by City & Guilds as an affiliate centre of Artybird Carnforth.

How does it work?

Debbie teaches this exciting new programme which is studied via distance learning so you can learn from the comfort of your own home at a time and pace to suit you. There’s no pressure and Debbie is on hand to assist and guide you. You will receive plenty of support on your learning journey.

The programme includes:

  • One-to-one tutor calls (by phone or zoom/teams) and regular check-ins
  • Our ‘coffee shop catch-ups’ – a great chance to have an informal chat with other students
  • Comprehensive, professionally produced videos showing all the key knitting techniques you’ll be learning
  • Photo-illustrated step-by-step tutorials which are available to view online or download and print
  • A student-only Facebook group as well as our Facebook page where you can keep up with the latest news
  • Topic-led live Zoom calls – chosen by students, this may be live journaling/sketching, covering a knitting technique or a discussion of our favourite artists

Is the Foundation programme right for me?

To get the most out of the programme we recommend that Foundation students are confident in the knitting essentials (cast on, cast off, knit, purl, increasing, decreasing, finishing and seaming). As the knitting techniques are taught with a design-led focus, some experience of design is useful. This could be from adapting commercial patterns or through skills gained on the Introductory programme or another course. If you are undecided between the Introductory and Foundation programmes, we would encourage you to get in touch and Debbie will be happy to talk you through the options.
